Results in the competition parts 2 and 4
The jury has decided the winners of the competition parts 2 and 4. The prizes were given out at the ceremony held at FinnRa premises, in Helsinki on 11th of December 1997.
The winner of the competition part 2 (the best mode of calculations in the first stage) is pseudonym Co&Co. Behind the pseudonym are Mr. Osmo Korhonen and Mr. Juha Korpi who work in the geotechnical department of Helsinki City. The Jury commented their answer as follows: "The writer demonstrates excellent knowledge about settlement calculations. The theories an parameters used are clearly shown and explained. The answer differs from routine calculations in a positive way."
The winner of the competition part 4 (the best mode of calculations in the second stage) is pseudonym Arne Saknussem, a group from Delft University of Technology: prof. Frits van Tol, Mr. Wout Broere and Mr. Arjen Kort. Their answer was commented by the Jury: "The report is very well written. The calculation methods and models are clearly shown. The layers and the selection of the parameters are presented with explanations."
The competition parts 1 and 3 will be resolved in autumn 1999, when the observation results of two years, which are required for resolving the competition, are available.
To the first part of the competition 9 entries arrived, pseudonyms Loukas TK, Co & Co, Benedictus, Rämäryhmä, Arttu, Hutiko, Pooki, Vanhanaikainen and 163. On the basis of the competition program the Jury accepted six entries to the first part of the competition. Pseudonyms Loukas TK, Arttu and Pooki were rejected. To the second part of 7 entries arrived, pseudonyms Pika, Arttu, Co & Co, Benedictus, Arne Saknussemm, ROCRLJ and YZCT. Five entries were accepted to the second part of the competition. Pseudonyms Pika and Arttu were rejected. On the basis of the competition program part 3.3 the contestants must present the calculations and the bases for them. An entry was rejected if the contestant did not present calculations or they were insufficient or if the competition program was not followed in other respects.
