Haarajoki test embankment
Observation results of the embankment, updated on 3rd of October, 2002
In the future the observation results and other information of Haarajoki test embankment are available on the web pages of Helsinki University of Technology, Laboratory of Soil Mechanics and Foundation engineering , address http://www.hut.fi/Units/Civil/FoundationSoil/ -> ‘Current Affairs’. The coming measurements which are to be made during August 2003, will be updated only on the web -pages of the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics and Foundation engineering. These Finnra -web –pages will no longer be maintained, and this update on 5th February 2003 will be the last one. The pages will be deleted in a couple of years.
Further information from the Haarajoki test embankment is available from Mr Matti Lojander, Helsinki University of Technology, Laboratory of Soil Mechanics and Foundation engineering, postal address: P.O. Box 2100, FIN-02015 HUT, FINLAND (fax +358 9 451 3758, e-mail: [email protected])

Introduction to the competition
Finnish National Road Administration has organised a competition to calculate settlements at Haarajoki Test Embankment. The task is to calculate the settlements of the embankment constructed on clay ground, the lateral displacements and the pore water pressure changes in the soil. The Haarajoki test embankment was constructed during summer 1997 after the competition was closed. The embankment is constructed on clay ground in part without ground improvement an partly onto vertically drained area. The construction plan was given to the contestants in forehand, so the construction schedule and order were able to take into consideration in the calculations. The contestants were asked to make calculations using three unit weights and the proper answers were chosen after the measured unit weight. Measurements, which were done during the construction of the embankment, showed that the average unit weight of the embankment is 21 kN/m3.
